Gambling Harm Project: Let’s Start yarning about gambling.
About the project
We worked with Iscariot Media project team to deliver focus groups and yarning interviews with Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Island people Far North Queensland. Using principles of cultural safety and community engagement. Jarraga co-developed a culturally engaged approach to conduct yarns with groups and individuals.
Community members were invited to share their stories and give voice on the development of Let’s Start yarning about gambling resources.

Community Support Centre Innisfail
About the project
We delivered cultural capability training to the Community Support Centre Innisfail. An important part of the training included place-based learning which honours the land and the traditional owners the Mamu people. Mamu Elders shared their wisdom and truths including the impact of colonisation and the resilience of their people.
Our training supported a collective knowledge of the history of place and supports learning from the past and the present.
The Cultural Capability training included

· identifying Cultural safety
· personal and organisational strategies to support the development and implementation of a culturally safe service.

Cultural Competence Audit
About the project
In 2024-2025, Jarraga was commissioned to undertake a comprehensive Statewide Cultural Competence Audit. This process included:
· a desktop review of organisational policies, procedures and relevant documentation utilising the Jarraga cultural audit tool
· thematic analysis of Yarning Circles with diverse staff members conducted during Phase One across seventeen regional sites in Queensland.
· assessment of workplace culture and employee feedback.
· evaluation of policies, communication, and practices through a cultural safety lens.
· a detailed report outlining practical and actionable recommendations for improvement.
The audit was designed to support services and staff strengthen inclusive and respectful engagement with First Nations and Zendath Kes/Torres Strait peoples and communities in service delivery. This process also supported stronger community engagement, while providing a framework for monitoring organisational progress and accountability over time.
Jarraga’s approach is grounded in respect, relational engagement, and ethical practice ensuring meaningful dialogue with First Nations and Zenadth Kes/ Torres Strait peoples and diverse communities. Guided by cultural safe principles, our audits are designed to be comprehensive, reflective, and practical – supporting organisations to embed culturally safe, inclusive, and responsive practices across their workforce and services.
